REVIEW: Zanna Don't, a musical fairy tale, is a must see!
Imagine a world where being gay is the norm.Imagine a world where the chess players are the superstars.
Imagine a world full of magic.
Imagine a world full of so much love, there is extra.
Imagine a world where the “hard stuff” is Ovaltine.
Imagine a world with Zanna, his wand and best friend Cindi.
All things combine into an explosion of color across the stage that creates the first production of a new community theatre in Reno presenting Zanna Don’t, a Musical “Fairy” Tale. The Tavern Theatre and The Patio, Reno’s Gathering Place, teamed up to produced the uplifting and feel good musical which takes to the stage weekends during the rest of August in The Patio’s backyard.
Bob Barsanti and Tony DeGeiso combined their talents with the choreography skills of Adam Whitney to make this a must see. When you leave the theatre setting you will feel good about life, yourself and cherish your friends.
But those that bring the musical to life are the 11 community theatre players who have been assembled to be the cast. As a collective they range in experience from decades to this is their first community theatre production.
You need to be on the look out for those faces of Candi McCallister (Stacy Johnson). Zanna (Adam Whitney) lets the rainbow shine and finds his extra love without realizing just how close it was. And as for the chess player, Mike Singer (Bill Ware) he does enjoy playing with his Queen, Steve Bookman (Bradford Ka’ai’ai), the school’s football team quarterback.
Kate (Bernadette Garcia) is too involved in achieving her goal of becoming a doctor to be in love. But Zanna’s wand (who likes to be read Cinderella before bed) has other ideas. Roberta (Amanda Alvey) falls in love at the drop of a hat. She gets over her heart break in five minutes, moving on to “next”!
A star in the crowd, amongst many, is Tank (Kyle Johnson), the Heartsville High discjockey on WLUV, Magic for some reason doesn’t have an effect on him and he waits in the wings. He also plays Tex who loves his father’s old recordings of Tom Jones (he’s gay isn’t he?)
Principal Cooper (Chris Daniels), Carla/Loretta (Lynn Lombardi), Arvin/Bronco (Michael Lawrence) and Officer Klotsky/Drama Coach/ Bar Wrench (Kathy Welch) complete the amazing cast.
Each cast member no matter how important the part has their own moment of glory on stage.
Zanna Don’t has only appeared three other times of the west coast and now in Reno. It is a must see whether gay, straight, questioning, any or all the above. It will be the best two hours spent this summer.
The show closed after 10 performances at The Patio.
